The Lake County library system has the following upcoming events:

? The J Street Jazz Combo, featuring brothers Alex and Jai Price, will perform in concert from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Monday (Feb. 28) at the Tavares Public Library, 314 N. New Hampshire Ave. The concert will feature the sounds of New Orleans and Mardi Gras, and is free.

? Historian Tom Wilcox, a staff member of the Leesburg Public Library, will present a program on the 90th anniversary of the kidnapping of Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh's 20-month-old son from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday (March 2) in meeting Room A&B of the library, 100 E. Main St.

The "Charles Lindbergh," program will feature the people and events surrounding the kidnapping and death of Charles Jr, including facts and speculation from the original FBI files and media from that time. The program is free, but registration is required.

? The East Lake County Library, 31340 County Road 437, Sorrento, will host a "Bookish Birdhouse," craft for adults from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday (March 3). Crafters will get to decorate an unfinished wooden birdhouse with pages from a favorite children's book. All supplies will be provided, including a selection of kids’ books, but participants are welcome to bring their own books.

? The W.T. Bland Public Library will host author Jana Milbocker, who’ll share highlights of her book "The Garden Tourist's Florida," at 4 p.m. Saturday (March 5). Copies of the book will be given away as door prizes. The public is welcome to attend the free event; registration is not required.

Opening reception for Whiskey Painters exhibit

The Lake County Museum of Art, 213 W. Ruby St., will host an, "Exit through the Gift Shop" opening reception for its Whiskey Painters of America exhibit from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday (March 4), with a "Speakeasy," style event on its rooftop.

The exhibit, featuring the works of professional watercolor artists in miniature form no larger than 4×5 inches, will run through April 2. Admission is $15 to $25 and includes drinks and snacks on the rooftop.

Cleanup Eustis

CleanUp Eustis will have its next group event beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday (March 5) at the Ferran Park Bandshell, 250 Ferran Park Dr, Eustis. Volunteers are needed to help clean up the park and along the shoreline of Lake Eustis. Supplies will be provided. High school students who help out can earn Bright Future scholarship hours.

Annual East Lake Heritage Festival

The East Lake Historical Society will sponsor its 8th Annual East Lake Heritage Festival from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday (March 5) at the East Lake County Library, 31340 County Road 437, Sorrento featuring bands, storytellers, Veterans Wall, children's crafts, auctions, slide presentation, games, church groups, food. Passive K9, crafters, a sweet shop, and more. The opening ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. with the Mount Dora High School ROTC. Admission is free.

Sisters of Suffrage celebrates anniversary

Sisters of Suffrage, an ad hoc group of organizations in and around The Villages will celebrate the anniversary of women winning the right to vote through the passage of the 19th Amendment during a "Standing on Their Shoulders: From Vote to Voice," beginning at 11 a.m. March 8 at Lake Sumter Landing in The Villages.

The International Women's Day event is open to the public and will include songs, history, and vision as participants celebrate the past, present, and future of the right to vote. Attendees are encouraged to wear the suffragist colors of white, yellow, and purple.

Lake County Fair Seeks Entrants for Art Barn

The Lake County Fair Association is seeking Creative Living entries for the 101st Lake County Fair April 7-16 from citizen bakers, crafters, artists and Green Thumbs for exhibition in the Art Barn. Residents of all ages are welcome to enter their creations in Fine Arts, Food Arts and Sciences, Confectionary Arts, Home and Hobby and Horticulture. Registration/entry is due by March 11.

Applications for American Rescue Plan grants sought

The City of Leesburg is now accepting applications for American Rescue Plan Civic Funding grants for Leesburg-based not-for-profit organizations who can demonstrate financial hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Priority will be given to those organizations that have not previously received COVID relief funding and organizations that have received COVID relief funding from the City of Leesburg are not eligible.

Applications are due by March 31, with City Commission review scheduled for April 11.

Funds will be distributed on a first-come first-served basis and will end when the allocation is fully disbursed.

Rookie Teacher of the Year, school-related employee finalists announced

Two elementary school teachers and one high school teacher – all with three years’ experience were recently announced as finalists for Lake County Public Schools Rookie of the Year.

The finalists are William "Lee" Fouraker, a television production teacher at East Ridge High, Alexa DeJarlais, a kindergarten teacher at Fruitland Park Elementary, and Tori Grable, a fifth grade teacher at Seminole Springs Elementary

Additionally, three District employees who provide essential support to ensure schools run smoothly — Serita Morgan, a family school liaison for Beverly Shores Elementary, Shaun Smith, the head custodian at Eustis Middle, and Susan Johnson, a first-grade teaching assistant at Fruitland Park Elementary School were tapped as the Lake County School Related Employee of the Year finalists.

The Rookie Teacher of the Year and School-Related Employee of the Year finalists were notified Feb. 17 by Superintendent Diane Kornegay, school board member Mollie Cunningham, and a caravan of representatives from the district.

The entourage visited each of the finalists’ schools to announce their recognition and to celebrate with their principals and other school staff.

The 2023 Rookie Teacher of the Year and the 2022 School-Related Employee of the Year will be announced during a March 9 reception at the Venetian Center in Leesburg.

Final day of GeorgeFest in Eustis

Today is the final day of the 120th Annual GeorgeFest in downtown Eustis and at Ferran Park. This year's theme is "Let the Good Times Roll." The three-day festival, the nation's second-longest-running celebration of George Washington's birthday behind Laredo, Texas, features a carnival, live music, food and more. Certify your backyard to help wildlife

The W.T. Bland Public Library, 1995 N. Donnelly St., Mount Dora, will host a program on "How to Certify your Backyard" at 2 p.m. today. Participants will learn tips on creating a wildlife-friendly garden that can be recognized as a Certified Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation. Door prizes will be included. The program is free and open to the public and registration is not required.

LC Swing Big Band concert in Leesburg

The LC Swing Big Band will perform their annual winter concert at 6 p.m. tonight at Graceway Presbyterian Church, 10200 Morningside Drive, Leesburg.

The concert will feature music from various popular movies including "Gonna Fly Now," "Westside Story Suite" and the premiere performance of a composition commissioned by Jim Beyer for LC Swing Big Band titled "Shaken, Not Stirred." This special arrangement is based on the various themes from the most popular James Bond movies and will be accompanied by visuals.

There will also be music from a popular Disney movie and beautiful ballads and Basie swing arranged by Sammy Nestico. Ali Dickson will be the featured vocalist. The concert will be under the direction of Larry Lutte.

Citywide yard sale in Umatilla

The Umatilla Public Library will have its 21st Annual citywide Yard Sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, featuring residential sales throughout the city as well as spaces for rent on the library grounds, 412 Hatfield Drive.

Maps will be available for a donation at the library prior to the sale. Any residents who would like to have their yard sale appear on the map can donate $7 to the Umatilla Public Library and receive a one-day yard sale permit. Spaces for rent at the library will be $12 plus tax. The Friends of the Library will host their annual used book sale inside the library during the yard-sale event.

Community discussion on civil discourse

The League of Women Voters of The Villages/Tri-County will host a community discussion on civil discourse, "Uprooting Prejudice: Conversations for Change," from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Wildwood Community Center, 6500 Powell Road.

Author Ann Patton will lead a "When Hate Roamed Free" presentation with lessons drawn from her book, "Unmasked," while Stephen Poynor, education curator of Florida's Holocaust Memorial and Resource Center will present tangible actions, "Conversations for Change," central to the current exhibition at the center.

The program will be moderated by Lou Sasmor of the Civil Discourse Club of The Villages and is free and open to the public.

26th annual St. Johns River Cleanup: 8-11 a.m. April 23. Boaters, scouts, civic organizations, environmental groups, businesses and individual volunteers are encouraged to help clean up the St. Johns River by removing trash and debris. Participants should bring water and wear sunglasses, a hat, sunscreen, work gloves and comfortable clothing. They may also bring rakes, shovels, trash grabbers, and canoes or boats. Explore Nature at the LEC: Discover Volusia County's native plants and wildlife during free indoor programs and outdoor hikes at Lyonia Environmental Center, 2150 Eustace Ave., Deltona. The 360-acre preserve adjacent to the LEC and Deltona Regional Library is home to a variety of wildlife, including Florida scrub jays and gopher tortoises, which are drawn to the low vegetation and sandy ridges of the scrub habitat. LEC staff has established public program procedures based on current guidelines. These procedures are subject to change based on guidance at the local, state and federal levels. Programs may be modified at any time as needed. Staff will offer the following programs –

—Tiny trekkers, 10-11 a.m. March 5. Children ages 2-5 will take a short hike, make a take-home craft, and listen to the book "Plant the Tiny Seed."

—All about owls, 2-3 p.m. March 5. Learn about commonly seen owl species in Volusia County and how to recognize them by sight and sound. Education staff will cover basic owl anatomy, feather design, diet and owls’ role in nature. Staff will dissect an owl pellet and identify the contents found. This program will be presented in the LEC classroom. A link will be provided to online participants.

—Lyonia hike and tour, 10-11:30 a.m. March 6. Experience Florida's unique scrub habitat on a guided hike in Lyonia Preserve. Learn about the animals and plants that call this desert-like environment home. Following the hike, the group will tour Lyonia Environmental Center's exhibit gallery to learn about the important role scrub habitat plays in recharging the Floridan Aquifer.

—Let's "Bee" Appreciative, 2-3 p.m. March 6. Learn about Florida's native bees and their important role as pollinators for gardens and the food supply. Staff will guide participants as they make their own bee houses. The cost is $4 per bee house; all materials will be provided. This program will be presented in the classroom and virtually. A link will be provided to online participants; they may pick up materials at the LEC before the program.

—Berries for birds, 10-11 a.m. and 1-2 p.m. March 10. Join Steve Kintner, vice president of the West Volusia Audubon Society, in the LEC pollinator garden as he discusses types of berry producing plants that do well in Volusia County. Participants will receive a free native plant for attending this in-person program.

—Lucky leprechaun hike, 10-11 a.m. March 12. Join staff on a guided hike in Lyonia Preserve to learn about scrub habitat and see how many lucky leprechauns you can find hidden along the trail. If you wear green, your name will be entered into a prize drawing.

—In search of nature in Central Florida, 2-3 p.m. March 12. In this classroom presentation, Master Naturalist and author Roger Fulton will discuss places you may never have heard of, even though some are in your own backyard. Learn about the Sherman's fox squirrel, the Florida scrub jay, a coastal strand area with unique plant life, and a host of other great places to enjoy nature.

—"Spring ahead into nature" hike, 10-11 a.m. March 13. Kick off daylight saving time with a guided hike into Lyonia Preserve. Explore what changes spring has in store for the plants and animals.

—Bountiful butterflies, 2-3 p.m. March 13. Staff will discuss these important pollinators and their vital role in the ecosystem. Afterward, participants will be entered into a drawing for a free milkweed plant, which has been donated by the Friends of Lyonia Environmental Center. An online link will be provided for those who participate virtually.

—"Springtime in the scrub" hike, 10-11:30 a.m. March 19. Look for signs of spring during this guided hike through Lyonia Preserve. This hike will include a visit to the two ephemeral wetlands in the preserve. Be prepared to hike on two miles of unpaved, sugar sand trails.

—’The Secret Life of Birds’: 1 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, March 19. Watch this BBC natural history film in the LEC classroom. Wildlife expert Iolo Williams investigates how and why birds communicate, their breeding and nesting behavior, and the survival challenges birds encounter. He also discusses how they are able to fly, the intricate design of their beaks, and how their color and camouflage enable them to live in many different habitats. Participants may bring snacks and nonalcoholic beverages.

—Alligators, 2-3 p.m. March 20. The American alligator is Florida's state reptile. Join LEC staff in the Discovery Room to learn more about this reptilian species and the important role they play in Florida's ecosystem. This program is recommended for all ages.

—Manatees, 3-4 p.m. March 23. Celebrate Manatee Awareness Day by learning about these amazing herbivores and how Floridians can help them survive. Staff will share information on various species found around the world and showcase replicas of manatee rib and flipper bones. Participants will be entered into a drawing to win a signed artist's manatee sketch.

—Fertilize like a Floridian, 2-3 p.m. March 24. Christie Miller, Be Floridian Now and volunteer coordinator for the county's Environmental Management Division, will explain how to protect local waterways and wildlife while still having a beautiful yard. Other lawn alternatives that require little or no fertilizer will also be covered. An online link will be provided for those who participate virtually.

—Lionfish, 2-3 p.m. March 26. Learn how divers are combating this invasive species and how the rest of us can help without even getting into the water. An online link will be provided for those who participate virtually.

—Snakes, turtles and lizards, 2-3 p.m. March 27. Florida is home to a diverse collection of reptile species. LEC staff will share some interesting facts and introduce participants to resident reptile ambassadors in the classroom.

—Scrub strolls, 9-10 a.m. every Friday through March. Volunteers will lead these exploratory hikes through Lyonia Preserve.

Volusia County Animal Services seeking volunteers: Animal Services is seeking volunteers to assist with a variety of functions – everything from lending a hand in the animal clinic and at public events to helping at pet shelters during declared emergencies. In addition to the animal clinic, disaster shelter and pet foster care, Animal Services is also seeking volunteers to help with administrative services as well as the return to field program for community cats. Duties run the gamut – anything from wrapping and cleaning surgical instruments, data entry and assisting with paperwork and traffic flow at pet microchip events to hugging puppies and kittens to help them recover after surgery.
