Multiple Grammy-nominated singer Jewel was tasked with performing the national anthem at the 107th running of the Indianapolis 500, but the fans’ reactions were mixed. The singer had her fair share of supporters, but some critics weren't pleased.
Some of the comments made on social media ranged from "The best I’ve ever seen" to "mangled" and "that was the worst singing ever at the Indy 500." There was no middle ground. One fan tweeted, "I think Jewel sang the national anthem with true passion and respect." But another countered, "Jewel destroyed the Star-Spangled Banner."
The singer's play was a straightforward guitar and vocal arrangement that showcased her distinct sound, which critics said did not suit the national anthem. Many argued that the melody was inconsistent and that some of the high notes were sorely missed.
Jewel wore a classy white dress while she performed, which contrasted with the traditional garments that previous performers have worn. Fans wished that she would have selected a more formal outfit for such a huge event.
The Grammy-nominated singer has sold over 30 million albums throughout her career, and she is most noted for her hits such as "Foolish Games" and "Hands."
Other individuals who took part in the Indy 500 were the ceremonial starters, who were Richard Petty, Mario Andretti, and Roger Penske. Andretti, who has won the Indy 500 as both a driver and car owner, was given the honor of driving the Corvette Grand Sport pace car to start the race.
On the second lap of the race's warm-up, Ryan Hunter-Reay lost control of his car, causing it to sway and sending one of his tires spinning over the fence and into the stands. A fan's car was struck by the tire, creating substantial damage to the vehicle's front end and windshield. The fan recounted that he thought someone was pranking him initially and that he was relieved that he and his wife were safe.
Another notable occurrence at the Opening Ceremonies was a performance by singer Chris Stapleton. He performed his most recent hit single "Arkansas" from an eight-foot-high wooden crate at the center of the infield grass. Fans sang along with the country star, who was donning his signature "Levon" fedora.
The Opening Ceremonies concluded with more than 100 balloons being released into the sky, with each balloon carrying a different nation's flag. This was an initiative that aimed to signify the unity of the world through the activity of racing. It was a touching and awe-inspiring moment for many fans.
Conversely, the division among fans after Jewel's national anthem performance overshadowed everything else that took place during the pre-race festivities. Perhaps it was an indication that the music industry and sporting events do not always fit well together, or maybe it was an issue of personal preference. Whatever the reason, this polarizing event has certain people discussing the national anthem's future of who should be selected to perform it at major events.
