Being warm and sentimental

I had a brainstorm earlier this year. Another anniversary, our 54th, should not be taken in stride. Sure, it's not a big one, like a 20 or 50 or 75. It is what it is: opportunity and incentive to accentuate the positive. After all, we know not how many more there’ll be. On this June 7, we’ll mark another anniversary with the words, "We did it!"

This time, I decided to do something different. In March, I began corralling some of my favorite "love notes," sentences primarily from literature and music that fit our peculiar love story. Most are one sentence long. After selecting 70 finalists, I typed and printed them out, cut them into 70 one-inch strips and stuffed them into a red, handmade, heart-shaped 5-x 5-inch wooden box that a youth group gave me years ago after they filled it with handwritten notes of appreciation.

Our morning ritual now for 70 days has been Dottie retrieving, unfolding and reading aloud one love note. What a sentimental journey down Memory Lane! We smile or laugh or ponder or discuss or choke up at each reading. Those were the days, my friend. I wish they’d never end.

Just today, the message drawn out read, "To love is nothing. To be loved is something. But to love and be loved, that's everything," written by Themis Tolis, an Athens, Greece, drummer.

Here are four others:

"I look at you, and I’m home." (Dory in "Finding Nemo")

"Love is that condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own." (Robert Heinlein)

"You complete me." (Jerry Maguire)

"I’ve got sunshine on a cloudy day. When it's cold outside, I’ve got the month of May." (The Temptations)

We are not cool people.

We prefer warm and sentimental.
