It's almost a given. If you hang a birdhouse, birds will come.

Three weeks ago, I bought a rustic wooden house with a red roof, created by farmer John Cromwell, and hung it in the garden.

I didn't see the chickadee pair build a nest, but they must have started soon after I put the box up.

The incubation period of chickadee eggs is a couple of weeks and the little ones have already hatched!.

Now I can't miss the chickadee couple as they come and go to feed their babes.

The pair comes close to fighting with one another to get in the box to take an insect to their chicks.

When one parent is in, the other is waiting on a nearby perch.

I’ve never see such earnest parenting.

My presence is only a minor annoyance as they race back and forth to the box with insects that they are gleaning from tree branches.

Chickadees often stay together as a pair for several years, and I hope Cromwell's birdhouse is just the right thing for a lasting marriage!

Cromwell's handmade bird homes will be for sale at Cromwell's Produce in Pungo when the stand opens in a few weeks.
